About Apple Rootstock – Standard Seedling

A strong start for a full-sized apple tree

These vigorous, seedling-grown rootstocks are used to produce standard, full-sized apple trees. Graft on the apple variety you want to grow: the rootstock supplies the roots and lower trunk, and your chosen variety forms the fruiting top.

When grafted and allowed to grow naturally, trees will typically mature to approximately 30–40 ft (9–12 m) tall. Final size varies with the variety grafted, soil, climate, growing conditions and pruning.

Who it suits

Seedling rootstocks are a good choice where a strong, vigorous, long-lived apple tree is wanted.

A great fit for

  • Traditional orchards
  • Homesteads and larger properties
  • Food forests
  • Wildlife plantings

Think twice if

  • You need a compact or dwarf apple tree
  • You want every tree to grow to exactly the same size

Questions growers ask

Is this a grafted apple tree?

No. This is the rootstock itself, ready for you to graft the apple variety of your choice.

What apple will the grafted tree produce?

The variety you graft on. The scion (the piece of your chosen apple variety) grows into the fruiting top, so the rootstock does not change which apple you harvest.

Will it make a dwarf tree?

No. These rootstocks produce standard, full-sized trees. Choose a dwarfing rootstock if you need a compact tree.

Will all the rootstocks grow the same?

No. They are grown from seed, so vigour, growth habit and mature size vary a little from plant to plant.

Would you rather skip grafting?
