About Silver Maple

One of the fastest-growing native maples

Silver Maple is one of the fastest-growing large maple trees in North America, making it an excellent choice when you want shade, height and a substantial landscape tree without waiting decades.

It gets its name from the beautiful silvery-white undersides of its leaves. When the wind moves through the branches, the leaves flash silver, giving the entire tree a shimmering appearance. Small reddish flowers appear before the leaves in early spring, followed by the familiar winged maple seeds.

A big tree for a big space

Give this tree room to grow. Silver Maple typically matures at approximately 50–80 ft (15–24 m) tall with a broad, spreading crown, and can grow larger in favourable conditions.

It loves sun and moist soil and tolerates seasonally wet ground, which makes it a natural fit for low spots, stream edges and larger yards.

A great fit for

  • Acreages, farms and large properties
  • Fast shade for an open, sunny space
  • Moist or seasonally wet ground

Think twice if

  • Your yard is small
  • The only spot is close to the house, paving, septic or sewer lines

Choose its place carefully

Fast growth comes with practical considerations. Silver Maple can develop surface roots and branches that are prone to breaking in storms. Plant it well away from buildings, driveways and underground services, and prune it while young to build a strong structure.

Questions growers ask

Is Silver Maple the same as Sugar Maple?

No. Silver Maple is Acer saccharinum; Sugar Maple is Acer saccharum. If you’re planning a sugarbush, Sugar Maple is the classic choice.

Can I tap it for syrup?

Yes. Silver Maple sap can be boiled into syrup, though it usually has less sugar than Sugar Maple sap and the trees bud out earlier in spring, which shortens the season.

How fast does it grow?

It is among the fastest-growing large maples. On a good, moist, sunny site young trees put on substantial growth each year; soil, moisture and competition all make a difference.

Can I plant it near my house?

It is best kept well away from foundations, paving and underground pipes because of its size, surface roots and branch breakage.
