About Mystery Apple Tree

The fun of growing a Mystery Apple

These seedling-grown apple trees come from seed collected in an orchard of selected apple varieties such as Russet, Red Delicious, Ambrosia, long-storage apples and other quality orchard apples.

But apples grown from seed do not come true to the parent variety. That means every Mystery Apple Tree is genetically unique, and you won’t know exactly what kind of apple it will produce until the tree begins to fruit.

It could be sweet. Crisp. Tart. Juicy. Red. Yellow. A great keeper. A cider apple. Or something completely its own.

A tree with a story still to unfold

As it matures, your tree brings spring blossoms and visiting pollinators to the garden, and in time its branches and fruit offer shelter and food for wildlife.

Give it a place where a large tree belongs: a homestead, a spacious yard, an orchard or a food forest. Allowed to grow naturally, these vigorous seedlings may reach approximately 30–40 ft (9–12 m), depending on the individual tree, site and pruning.

A little patience, and an honest expectation

Growing a seedling apple is a long-term project. It can take a number of years before flowering and fruiting begin, and fruit quality is unpredictable: your apples may be perfect for eating, baking or cider, or best left for wildlife. We can’t promise a particular flavour, colour, storage life or harvest date.

If a dependable named eating apple is your priority, a grafted tree of a known variety is the more predictable choice. If you enjoy discovery and have room to grow, this tree offers a different kind of reward.

Questions growers ask

Will it be an Ambrosia or a Red Delicious?

No named variety is promised. The orchard’s varieties describe the seed’s background; each seedling grows its own new combination of characteristics.

Do I need another apple tree?

Most apples set fruit best with a compatible apple or crabapple nearby that flowers at the same time. Because this seedling’s bloom timing is not known yet, check what is flowering alongside it once it matures.

Will it fruit next year?

Don’t expect an immediate harvest. Seedling apples take a variable number of years to reach fruiting age, and the timing for any one tree can’t be guaranteed.

Is it suited to a small garden or a patio pot?

It grows into a vigorous, full-sized tree, so it is best planted where it has room for that growth.

Would you prefer a known variety?

Our seedling apple rootstock lets you graft the apple variety of your choice onto a strong, full-sized root system.
