About Pin Oak

Small above ground. Built to grow.

Young oak seedlings often put a surprising amount of their early growth into the root system. Although these Pin Oaks are only around 5 inches tall at the time of sale, they come with long bare roots ready to be planted directly into their permanent location.

They are intentionally sold as small planting-size stock, making them economical, easy to transport, quick to plant and ideal when you want to establish multiple trees at once. Once established, Pin Oak can develop into a large and impressive shade tree.

Perfect for planting in numbers

  • Forestry plantings
  • Restoration projects
  • Wildlife habitat
  • Naturalized areas
  • Acreages and farms
  • Woodland establishment
  • Property boundaries
  • Planting multiple oak trees affordably

Give it the right ground

Pin Oak grows best in full sun and moist, acidic soil. On alkaline ground it can develop iron chlorosis, a yellowing of the leaves caused by difficulty taking up iron, so the right soil matters more than anything else.

On a good site, this young seedling can become a large shade tree with deeply lobed leaves, a distinctive form and rich fall colour, and its acorns support wildlife as it matures.

Questions growers ask

Why is it only about 5 inches tall?

This listing is intentionally young seedling stock. The size describes what you receive, not how big the tree will grow; much of a young oak’s early growth goes into its roots.

How do I give small seedlings the best start?

Plant promptly, keep grass and weeds cleared from around each seedling, mark them so they aren’t mowed, and protect them from browsing deer and rabbits.

Is Pin Oak the same as Swamp White Oak?

No. Pin Oak is Quercus palustris; Swamp White Oak is Quercus bicolor, a different species.
