The amount of fruit and nuts that you can get by planting your own food forest garden is ming boggling. The possibilities are endless with the types of plant you can grow. Hazelnuts, black walnuts, butternuts, red, black and white currants. And elderberries are only a short list of the good food you can pick from these trees and shrubs in the years to come. But...... first you have to plant them.

Pick Delicious Berries All Summer Long.
When you first discover elderberries, a sweet berry that is easy to pick in the middle to the end of summer. You will wonder why you hadn't known about them sooner. What can I do with all these round black edible delightful berries? You can make jams and jellies, elderberry pies. Pick and dry your elderberries And make elderberry syrup. A winter elixer for the immune system. Your body will thank you for it.
We can say the same for currants. Make all the same traditional sweet dishes and conserves. People will tell you that the white ones are sweeter than the red, some will say the red are sweeter than the white. But mostly everyone will tell you that the black ones are the most antioxidant rich in nutrients and goodness. And growing these right in your own garden and being able to enjoy picking punnets of them every year is so satisfying and rewarding.
Long Term Food Solution In These Trees.
Nut trees are the storage crop of your garden. Treat them as you would a cabbage or carrot, potato or apple. They serve as your long term solution for edible storage food. Nuts will keep in a cool dark place for over 12 months, or until another crop of nuts comes along next harvest season.
Collect Nuts Every Year.
In the Fall you can collect nuts either from the tree or on the ground. Hazelnuts can be collected from the tree just before they are ripe, taken inside dried and cured for storage. Black Walnuts and Butternuts fall to the the ground each year waiting to be picked up by you. They are as big and sometimes bigger than a chicken egg. Gather your friends and family to help you and bring a bag or a basket to retrieve your haul. Collecting nuts is an exciting thing to do and after you have collected all the nuts it's time to process them.
Perennial Food Crops.
Once your trees reach maturity they will produce a crop every year. No more having to plant seeds each year for annual crops. Plant only once and you will have an established Food Forest Garden for you and your future generations. Each crop year is different. Some years you will have an excess amount of fruit and nuts. What is called a 'Mast" year. Share some with friends and family. Give some out as harvest gifts or end of year celbrations presents. Other years you will get an average crop as mentioned above with numerous pounds of edible food for the taking.
How Many Nuts Will I get?
You can expect up to 30 pounds of hazelnuts per tree each year. Thats enough to make hazelnut butter, add some to your muesli mix and have plenty for roasting and eating raw. The Black Walnut and Butternut trees produce on average 50 pounds of nuts per year. A great amount to feed you or a family. They are easy to pick and easy to store.
